Follow the Reader

We're pleased as punch to be attending Readercon again this year. I'll likely write about it next week, and whatever goodies we discover at the Food and Books diner by Mass Rte 30. (They make a rockin' lobster roll, much better than Legal Seafoods, I hope it's on the menu Thursday.) I've been catching up on reading GoH Jonathan Lethem, even though Spouse is very impatient that I finally finish The Execution Channel so he can crack jokes about stuff in it. Hell, I still have to go through the bagful of old books we bought last year and haven't yet read so we don't accidentally buy them again...

Ah, the old early-with-Jim-and-Barbara trick again!

Remember, if it weren't for Shira, Lethem wouldn't have a career at all. She is, after all, responsible for his first Major Award, without which those others (minor things such as the MacArthur) would never have come.

What's that, you say that I was actually responsible for the William L. Crawford Memorial Award for that year? True, but Shira and her cohorts read all of the "real" fantasies that we might have considered the year before, so we were left to give the award to Lethem.

Without which, he surely would not have had the confidence to continue.
